Head Sweet Fat Thang Twin Tip Skis Reviews
Average Rating: (15 reviews)

This may be the ideal true all mountain ski for those who ski well but aren't quite hitting 40 foot cliffs. It is wide enough for most any powder condition and nimble enough with a decent sidecut to still ski the rest of the mountain quite well. There is the matter of the butterflies.. yes they are butterflies and if you don't want to save all those Benjamins you can find a pair elsewhere without Butterflies.

Excellent loose powder/mush ski
By Karlme224 from Calgary on 06/06/2011
Pros: Fabulous in loose powder and mush
Cons: On groomed runs they are just ok
On May 14th I went skiing at Sunshine Village and had a riot picking up speed on every run as the skis just sliced through the 2:30 mush. Lots of fun
They realy are sweet! I luv em

Pros: These things takle anything, Chicks dig the B-flies
Cons: Being 186cm and a wide turning ski can make em a little tricky on narrow east coast trails, but its not that bad
After a few months searching for a good all around ski to fit my needs, I set my sights on the mojo90. After getting the 90's there was a mishap before I ever got to try em, and I came back to lvl9 to see if I could pick up another pair. Alas, they had sold out and I was forced with a dilemma. Get butterflies, or look else where. I decided that I would man up and and rock the B-flies, I told myself if it becomes an issue I can always get a cover. I got a chance to compare the 2, and they are exactly the same with the exception of the top sheet. After hitting the slopes I realized that the butterflies were more of a conversation piece on the lift ride up, and the chicks dig em. I was thinking the B-flies were gonna be the worst thing about these TT's, but as it turns out they are as cool as the ski it self. I've never seen another pair on anyone. I ski mostly in NC and WV. I can say that these skis are power houses on groomers and lightning fast. They power through the crud, and float like a dream on the occasional powder we pick up. Compared with other skis I've been on, these things feel like Cadillacs. One other thing, this was my first set of TT's I didn’t know that I needed to de-tune the factory edges on the tips and tails. This cost me a torn MCL on opening day. If u grab the Fat thangs make sure you do so before hitting the hill. Oh yeah, thanx lvl9 for the kick azz deals!

Pros: Good float, good on softer cord, can rip some tighter turns
Cons: Those 15 year-old, mommy got me all my stuff, fashion show, pants on the ground, all look alike terrain park kids might beak you at the chalet when you come in with your butterfly skis. Solution: powder in your ears from actually skiing.
I got these skis before the season and got about 25 mountain days on them this year. Im a 6'2'' 170 pound guy, past advanced but no expert, and had great season on these skis.Ski the rockies in Alberta and BC. Great float for their width and they can rip out turns on the softer cord. Ski hard and fast. The more you push them and the harder you ski the better they will perform. RIpped out huge GS turns at mach chicken with no chatter. They would squirrel out on me on the icy morning cord from time to time, but who wants to be on that anyway. Might leave something desired to some who ski more groomers or at slow speeds, but they have been a treat.

Had a ridiculous snow year and got a chance to ski some 60+ chowder with these, a wider ski would have been better but these still did a stand up job. Was able to pump out quick turns in the glades and went steep and deep a few times. Skis did great.

The butterflies are nothing, if you worry about how your skis look rather than how they ski then don't get these. The extra Ben's I saved on these got me more mountain time this year. Go Mike Tyson on the mountain and float like a butterfly, they won't sting your pocket like a bee. That just happened.
Butterflies Rule
By skifan56 from Port Henry, NY on 04/14/2011
Pros: This ski is the perfect all-rounder. I ski big east mtns. and these skies never let me down. They were awesome on crud, ice, pow, and groomers.
Cons: Had to put a couple stickers on to cover up the butterflies and maybe on a perfect corduroy day I'd switch to my Super Sports but that's not really a con is it.....oops my bad !
I'm not all techno about stuff but the light weight let me ski way more this year then my stiffer rockets. So maybe I wasn't the first one down on the groomer days but this year we saw my pow days and I ruled.
Don't Go Slow!
By Headflaps from NC on 04/12/2011
Pros: Very stable on all terrain, nice float on powder
Cons: grabby on piste at slow speeds
I am M, 41 yrs, 5'11", 175 lbs and I have the 176cm with all-mountain mounting (back from center). I prefer off-piste, trees, and moguls. I live in NC, but ski in the Rockies only. My skill level is somewhere between advanced and expert. I have about 80-90 days total on skis.

I had some reservations for the first hour or two on the skis, and that is primarily due to me "taking it easy" to start out... don't do that! They like to go fast and will carve well for their size when you get them moving... you don't need to break the sound barrier, but if you ski them at a slow intermediate level, they tend to catch their edges.

Due to the mild taper, I found these to be quite good in moguls. They are not a mogul ski, so they don't make them easy, but they don't require any additional effort either. I would have expected to need to adjust my technique considerably, due to their width but no.

I had only one day on fresh snow... 6" to 10" of powder. No complaints... they were perfect!

Off-piste in tracked out snow, they were excellent. Absolutely great in steeps, because they don't get kicked out from under me when I hit a big pile. I skiied faster than I ever have and with much more confidence!

Very forgiving if you like to catch a little air (or probably if you like big air too... I just can't tell you personally). I CAN tell you that I've always had great success with jumping... just not so much with landing. That changed on these skis. Keep in mind that I'm only talking about a few feet.

My only other ski experience has been K2 160cm Apache Recons. I still love those skis, as I learned on them and they are more fun at slow to medium-fast on the groomers, but there is no way I'm going back!

And, I like the butterflies... I'm just glad they were green and not pink!
Love em
By Eckfest from Northern Michigan on 03/26/2011
Pros: versatility, weight, price
Cons: took bit getting used to
I got these for powder and crud days here in the midwest, plus for when I go west. After a couple days to get used to the wider skis, I have found I like them for everything except racing. They handle cordoroy just fine and excell in the crud allowing me to blow through it. I have a gimpy knee, so crud was always my downfall and now it is bombs away. Love the weight and have no problem with the butterflies.
Fun skis!
By Sandi from Kansas City on 03/26/2011
Pros: perform well on all types of conditions
Cons: need after market ski carrier handles for the wider skis
I bought these for my husband (yes, butterflies and all, he's secure in his masculinity) and he took them to Vail. He said they were fun skis that did very well in the powder, moguls and tree skiing that he loves. Great skis!
Sweet ski
By Think from Whistler on 03/24/2011
Pros: versatile!
Cons: low tip
5'8", 150 lbs male, advanced. 176 cm. Great ski for all mtn. Skis fast well, easy to turn or run straight. Forgiving if you get off balance. Only complaint is the small rise in the tip. I should have mounted 1 cm back. Easy to learn to ride switch on. Holds edge reasonably well on hard snow too.
Not to be overlooked

Pros: Owning them
Cons: Not found yet
Our local mountain has a 201 inches/512cm base with light packed on sides of groomed runs. The backside is knee-deep powder. Forest runs are spectacular. The direct and indirect sun has created all types of surfaces. These skis cooked, cut and carved through anything I sought out and then some. I even sailed through the ski-cross park with skis 5-10cm longer beside me. Money unbelievably well spent. Butterflies? What butterflies?
Best Ski I Have Ever Owned
By Kevin P from NJ on 02/10/2011
Ski hard on any surface!!! I am from the east coast and have skied these on the hardpack and ice and they grip like nothing else, and when you take them to the powder (where they are designed to be) they can't be stopped. I am in love with the ski and the butterflies are growing on me too. Headed to CO now. Can't believe how great this ski feels.
L9 Q&A
By L9 CS Team on 10/16/2010
You'll float across the powder like butterflies on the wind, like butter on a warm biscuit, like butter left out too long at a picnic across the table cloth. You get it, ask if you're confused.
Get some stickers
By L9 Chris on 03/01/2010
This ski is freaking awesome and I think it looks allright.. anyway if a couple green butterflies aren't worth saving a few hundred bucks then maybe you've heard of stickers.

Great Ski....don't let the butterflies scare you away.
Best decision ever!
By L9 Rich on 02/19/2010
I got these skis this year and have never made a better decision in MY LIFE! I used to use my Rossi Racing skis all mountain and I though it was ok but after I bought these, I realized that I had been missing soooo much in the last 15 years. I garauntee you that they ski ten times better in park, powder, moguls, and groomers than any racing ski on the market. Sure they look a little feminine but as long as you arent a pussy and know how to ski, you can pull it off. PLUS: They are great for skiing backwards east coast OR West.
